Thursday, April 28, 2016 is Pay it Forward Day.
Pay it Forward Day was founded in 2007 by Australian Blake Beattie. It has grown exponentially in just a few short years with 75 countries participating and individuals working on proclamations in 42 states and 47 cities.
Every year since, we honor Pay it Forward Day with acts of kindness being bestowed on our communities with the expectation that these acts will be carried forward.
For this year’s international Pay it Forward Day we are aiming to inspire and be a part of over 10 million acts of kindness around the world. What a difference this will make!
An act of kindness makes us feel good about ourselves and makes somebody else feel they matter. Even small gestures have a far-reaching, powerful, and lasting effect. When we engage in an act of kindness, we give and receive unconditionally, no strings attached. When we give, we acknowledge the goodness in our lives, which in turn spurs us to connect with others without need of reward or recognition.
When we act on behalf of another, we give help and receive help all at the same time. Acts of kindness elevate the giver and the receiver. It is impossible to dwell on aspects of our own lives, when we reach out in aid to others. A life of quality does not depend on how much you have. It depends on how much you give.
Happily, there are thousands of Pay it Forward Day stories to be found. TrikleTrade has many pay it forward stories of our own. A couple examples are: one of our members, "Seeker" was looking for a horseback ride in exchange for home repairs. Another member, “Absent needed to replace a kitchen floor. "Seeker" helped get the hard dirty, on your knees rotten job done, with no complaints, a sense of humor, and a desire to get the best results as possible. As a result he got his first horseback ride and both members paid forward this experience by answering requests for assistance from other TrikleTrade members.
Another example is a nonprofit organization needed a laptop to accomplish their goals and keep their after-school program thriving. They heard about TrikleTrade and were eager to become a member recognizing that we offered a way to connect and collaborate with a larger audience outside of their immediate community. Once they joined and created their profile, they posted a request for the laptop. A TrikleTrade member saw the listing, reached out, and donated the laptop. In return, the nonprofit recipient answered the request of another nonprofit organization. This time the request was for blankets for a children’s shelter. Girls in the recipient’s after school dance program hand-made blankets and donated them to the shelter.
Acts of kindness are often unexpected, but no matter how small, places us on a trajectory that profoundly changes lives. In the words of Mark Twain, “If you want love and abundance in your life, give it away.” Affecting someone’s day in a positive way through acts of kindness has a ripple effect, and that is what TrikleTrade is all about.
